Schools Growing in Rutherford County

The School Board of Rutherford County may expand some of their current schools as opposed to building new ones. Two of the schools being considered for a combined total expansion project of $8.8-million dollars include Siegel High School and Eagleville School. The expansion of Siegel High School would include 12-new classrooms. The expansion at Eagleville would add 23-new classrooms.

Christiana Elementary is currently under construction where an addition to the front of the building is being built. Past expansion projects include Smyrna High, LaVergne High, Blackman, Riverdale and Oakland High Schools.

Rutherford County Schools considers space for regular classrooms only. In the last 30 years there has been growth in student services in specialty areas, but adequate space for these services has not been provided. Some of the specialty areas that need an office or small space in a school are: guidance counselors, SROs, English as a Second language, Speech, Occupational, Physical therapists, specialists for blind or deaf students, school psychologists, band, choral music, volunteer tutors, educational assistants, graduation coach, assistant principal, juvenile probation, homebound, specialist for the homeless, social worker, Title programs, IEP meeting area, behavior specialists. This is in no way a complete list. It is not unusual for these professionals to work in a school bus out in the parking lot or be assigned to sit on the floor in the hallway. The number of these professionals is growing. It is not unusual for a school to have more than one guidance counselor or more than one speech pathologist assigned to one school. The benefit to the student is limited when the room assignment is a closet with no heat or air which is shared by 3 different specialists and their students.

I could not agree more. However, you must consider in Rutherford Co we build a new school and within 1-2 years there are 6-8 portables sitting on the property. Although your concerns are real, the solution is probably not in the stars. It’s called long range planning people…it’s not rocket science!
